Watch At My Funeral TikTok Video HERE.

So, you saw the video on Dawn’s social media accounts, and that brought you here.

You may be wondering, “Why in the world would someone pretend to post as Dawn from her own funeral?”

The answer is simple: Dawn had a beautifully morbid, sick, twisted sense of humor, and she would’ve loved this.

But there’s a longer answer, and it requires some back story. Buckle up for a trip into the recent past.

I’m Beth Anderson, Dawn’s friend. The day after Dawn passed away, I was looking through old texts we’d sent each other. I sent a few funny ones to her husband, Steve, including this exchange:

Steve texted me back with an idea he called “creepy”: what if we posted from one of her social media accounts during the funeral? He knew she’d love it.

He pointed out that it would be similar to one of her books, Somewhere in Between. In case you haven’t read it yet, it’s a brilliant story that’s narrated by a dead woman who’s stuck “somewhere in between” her original life and the afterlife. Here’s a snippet from page 2:

That’s right, the book starts out with a woman who finds herself at a funeral and doesn’t realize she’s the one who died.

I agreed to help Steve and his kids think of ideas. In the middle of the night, I couldn’t sleep (which is such a “Dawn thing,” ugh!). I thought about how we could basically recreate that book scene, but from Dawn’s point of view.

But I didn’t want to leave it at that. I wanted a way to reach out to those who saw this morbid, oh-so-Dawn video. I wanted you to know the heart behind it … to hopefully make you smile and feel connected to Dawn. To give you one more way to appreciate the wonderful, creative, funny person she was. To remind us all that, through her written words and our memories, Dawn is still with us.

Steve was confident Dawn would love the idea. So I reached out to Rebecca Graves, Dawn’s close friend and website designer, to ask if she could make a new page on Dawn’s website. Rebecca and Dawn had always connected over their dark humor, so she was on board too.

We all hope you enjoyed a little glimpse of what we think Dawn would have wanted. It’s a day of mourning, yes. But it’s also a day to joyfully celebrate this woman who was so incredibly kind and loving, yet had a mind capable of creating the darkest things, whether they were psychological suspense novels or morbid texts.

Dawn, while you were here, I doubt you fully grasped what you meant to so many of us. I hope you see it now. We’re all looking forward to the day when we can laugh with you again.

I’ll close with something Dawn wrote in The End of Echoes, another of her novels. People on social media have been sharing this page since her passing, because it’s so beautifully appropriate. Once again, it’s from the point of view of a character who’s passed beyond this life.
